Just curious, how many dancers here do other forms of dancing? Did you start in that form? Do you still practice it?

Re: Other dance styles
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:36 PMI do Phillipine Dance and Hula Dance. I started Hula a long time ago and then gave it up and now I'm back. I still practice both forms or dance. It's two different dances so it keep me busy when I'm not working or in school.
I have hopes of picking up a Ball room dance class with my husband when things settle down around here...

Re: Other dance styles
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:17 AMHi Kathy,
I'm not in AZ yet but I love keeping track of the fabulous things Midriff is doing!
I study Lyrical dance pretty extensively. I started out in Jazz and Ballet (as most little girls do) and it lead to Lyrical before I began bellydancing. I love fusing the two together, giving my performances more of a theatrical quality to them...

Re: Other dance styles
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 3:58 PMStarted in the womb! My parents are AMAZING ballroom and western dancers, my great grandfather was a champion Ho-Down dancer who was legendary in the hills of Ohio. I probaly knew how to waltz before I walked, formally I started ballet and tap at age 3 did that for a few years, then studied Modern Dance in HS and College for awhile. Started teaching Western Swing at age 17 but have not done it much for 20 years!!
Now I dance occasionally with my parents otherwise just belly dance.

Re: Other dance styles
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 2:31 PMMy parents/guardians didn't let me formally study dance....something that still chaps my hide to this day. I dabbled in modern dance in college, but felt put on the spot by the teacher and felt like the other girls in the class were sharks, just waiting to point out my faults and lack of training (they all seemed to have been studying forever).
My dancing was informal....I started going to clubs when I was 12 and danced to all the music I loved. Discovering bellydance was an amazing thing for me. I was hooked after a few months and learned what I could. I still study it today.
I still want to learn other dance forms. I just WANT to. I'd love to learn Hip-hop. I'm totally afraid to go and learn because it's outside my comfort zone. And I'm afraid I'll discover that I have no rhythm!!! -

Re: Other dance styles
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:18 PM...he's going to work you all very hard! But it is a ton of fun. I have only taken one class with him, but I have had the joy of working with him when I did in room dining (room service) over night and he is a very wonderful, talented individual. I might even be up to take a class again. And I think Allison wanted too as well. Hmmm...how about a belly dance invasion?

Re: Other dance styles
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 8:37 PMI'm always sad/envious when i see kids who get to do lots of stuff like dancing and marital arts. I never got to do anything but piano and i had to quit that because of money issues.
I think you should go for the hip hop dancing. I always thought you were a good dancer whenever we went to dances and stuff-and that was to hip hop and all types of music. Now that I've seen you dance at something you've been trained in, you are an awesome dancer. I think anything you put your mind and body to you'll be able to do.

Re: Other dance styles
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 5:08 PMI had always wanted to dance but my parents never let me when I was growing up either. I did do some modern dance when I was in high school. That's the only other dance style I have ever personally done until 2000 when I started bellydancing. -

Re: Other dance styles
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:23 PMI figured I should actually answer the question since I posted that other response;-) I LOVE to dance and started out in classical ballet when I was a child. Now, as an adult I have studied argentine salsa (fairly extensively), african, and some dabke. I am a dance addict though admitedly I have been a little out of it lately. My son is such a distractioin! -

Re: Other dance styles
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 7:34 PMThere is also a beginning hip hop class that is ADULT only at parks and rec, I know several people who have taken it and said it was excellent if you no hip hop experience (I heard it is very "Basic" move intensive) and its super cheap. -
