On Saturday, July 12th, Midriff Crisis and other talented, lovely, and awesome Tucson Bellydancers will be performing at Black Rose Caffe from 6:30-7:30pm.

This show will be all ages!

Dancers will be accepting tips, so show your appreciation for their skills by bringing your dollar bills!

Also, Black Rose makes some yummy food and super tasty drinks.

Don't forget to show your support for this local entity by sampling some of their good eats!

Enter another place and time where world fusion bellydance company, NATIUM World Dance, known for Improvisational Tribal and Modern Fusion Bellydance, hosts Bohemian Cabaret Danse de Cirque Bellydancers, Tramps and Freaks.
This showcase of talent takes place August 16th 2008 at The Sets, in Tempe Arizona at 93 East Southern Ave, East of Mill.
As audience members wander in they are greeted with sights, sounds and scents evocative of exotic destinations, worlds away, and of times forgotten. From the lavish decorations of other countries and times in history, to the enticing sounds of worlds coming together under one roof, audiences will feel as though traveling to mysterious, foreign lands or eras long past. Wander through the mini bazaar to barter, haggle and bid on unique objects d’arte from artisans, vagabonds and tramps.
Bohemian Cabaret Danse de Cirque Bellydancers, Tramps and Freaks is brought to you and created by the same brainchild of Phoenix’s successful Romantasy Cababret, Lucy Morals. Her vision this time involves more of the dancing (who doesn’t like dancing girls!?) and brings you a unique showcase of cutting edge performance, bellydance tableaus, and theatrical dance entertainment. A blend of various aspects of vaudeville, historical and theatrical dance and saucy stage revues will bring Phoenix a unique entertainment event of the
summer.
Behold the mysticism of bellydance, the dangers of fire dance, the temptations of burlesque and the art of theatrical dance numbers as groups from around Arizona, Nevada and California come together to entertain you.
Prepare to enjoy 3 hours of entertainment followed by an after-show cast and crew dance party. After the show, we open up the dance floor for all to take part in the after party soiree. Performers from the show come out to dance and mingle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.
This event is for people 21 and over only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.
Gratuities and tips are always appreciated. Door proceeds will benefit Amazing Aussies at www.amazingaussies.com . Several raffles will be held throughout the night and raffle ticket sales will also be donated to Amazing Aussies. This is an organization Natium has benefited at past events to help the group fostering, adoptions, buying supplies, medical aid and educating the public about for these special Australian Shepherd dogs.

I have a part-time job for the summer (law clerk w/ the county) and spend my days off riding. Since I'm actually making some money for once, I started riding lessons again. I think that about does it for me (I'm very dull). What about the rest of you?

July 4th Club Congress

Midriff will be performing 2 sets at the 4th of July Freedompalooza party at Club Congress....

The doors open at 6pm- it's only 5 smackaroos and you get a great view of the downtown fireworks.

We'll be doing a set by ourselves at some point in the evening (we haven't yet been told) and then we'll perform with The Mission Creeps after the fireworks!!!

A loss for our community

I am sad to report that Carrie Compton of Veils of Mystery has passed away. Many of you may know Carrie as an amazing performer in spite of her blindness. It was always amazing to watch her perfom, I remember the many Veils shows I attended when I was just learning to dance, I was always fascinated by Carrie and so inspired by her attitude and perserverence. This is a great loss for the Tucson dance community. My deepest sympathy to all of her sisters from Veils.

MECDA Fall Festival of Music & Dance - Nov. 1 Phoenix

The MECDA chapter is now taking reservations for performance spots on the festival stage. We will have ongoing entertainment from 10:30am to 5:00pm - that's a lot of dancing - come be part of it!

Soloists 5 minutes
Duet/Trio 10 minutes
Troupes 4+ 15 minutes

There will also be 7 drop-in workshops presented by instructors from throughout the state- including Gina!There

We also need people to volunteer to help with admissions, stage managing and workshop helpers - this can be just a 1 or 2 hour stint during your day and will be greatly appreciated. It takes a LOT more than the 4 members of the MECDA chapter board to run an event like this!

Zil Practice Tomorrow night 5/13

Tomorrow evening at Fighter Practice we will be doing a zil (finger cymbal)session. Everyone is welcome we will be going over several standard zil patterns for belly dance and drum accompanyment.
We plan to start the drills at 8pm and go for about 30 minutes. I will be with the drummers beginning at 7:30pm for any total beginners that would like to go over the basics before we te4ach some patterns.
I hope anyone that can get ahold of a set of zils will come join us.

NATIUM World Dance & Kahlea will be hosting 2008's Bohemian Nights, a bellydance collection. The showcase will be a monthly or every other monthly showcase of all types of bellydance. Alterna-cirque bellies WELCOME!

Shows will take place at a venue in the Tempe area and will have an oldey timey, circus side-show, exotic feel. Bellydancers of all disciplines are welcome from:

Traditional : Egyptian, Turkish, Orientale, Persian, etc...
Tribal: ATS, World Tribal, Fusion, Modern Fusion, and Goth Fusion
World dance: West African, Eastern Euro folk, Flamenco, Zambra, Folklorico
Circus/show dance: Little Egypt, Mata Hari, Aerialists, themed...

Enter another place and time where world fusion bellydance company, NATIUM World Dance, known for blending various world dance flavors with bellydance, hosts Bohemian Nights, A bellydance cirque. This showcase of talent takes place in 2008 at _________, in Tempe Arizona.
As audiences wander in they are greeted with sights, sounds and scents evocative of exotic destinations, worlds away, and of times forgotten. From the rich looking textiles and decorations from other countries, to the sounds of worlds coming together under one roof, audiences will feel as though traveling to mysterious, foreign lands. Each Bohemian Nights showcase kicks off with a free mini bellydance lesson to familiarize the audience with this art form and to incite excitement for the dance jam later. Then, Bohemian Nights becomes a two hour-long showcase of dancers, ranging from student performers showing off what they've learned in classes, to semi-professionals desirous of more exposure, to special professional dancer guest stars who will light up the night. Some performers will dance with props such as swords, Chinese fans, fire, veils, skirts and more. After each event, the dance floor opens up for all dancers, whether in the show or in the audience, to get up and take part in an open-floor bellydance soiree, into the night. Performers from the show come out to dance and migle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.

These events are for 21 and over crowds only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to a charity or used to benefit a local business selected by NATIUM World Dance, with a different charity or business selected for each show. Raffle tickets sold will also benefit these select organizations, with all proceeds donated to that charity or business. Gratuities and tips are always appreciated, a portion of which may also be donated to the charity or business selected as well.

FCBD seminar

Hi everyone. My friend Jenn Goran, the director of Tribe Nawaar http://www.tribenawaar.com and former student of Carolena Nericcio, is coming back to Tucson this year for gem show and is willing to do another seminar. She taught ooey, gooey ATS moves last year. She could do more of the same, teach a series of different ATS combinations or even do a workshop on making coined bras or flowers. Before scheduling something, I want to test the waters. How many of you:

1. Want a(nother) ATS seminar?
2. If so, what do you want to learn?
3. Are there any dance related conflicts on February 2nd or 3rd?

I'm doing my first "scientific talking head" TV appearance! Well, that and I get to spin fire too (it all makes sense in the show.) So catch the first episode ("Alien Planets") of the second season of "The Universe" (bet you can't guess what this show is about...) Tuesday Nov. 27th, 9/8 central on the History Channel. Hopefully I don't look like a total goober... ;-)

Midriff Crisis will be out at the park in full force tomorrow night. That is right!! All six of us will be out there.

I know you all want to practice new moves from class, Boom Boom, and BellyQueen. We will be dancing and jamming with the drummers of Clan Nightwolf and members of the SCA. It will be a blast!!!! Don't forget to bring your props...drums, swords, zills, fans, veils, or whatever else floats your boat. No lit fire props though!! Bring the kids, a picnic, and/or a blanket to sit on!! It usually kicks off around 7:30 PM and runs until 9'ish. It is so beautiful this time of year at night. Come in to the parking lot on 22nd just east of Country Club. Look for the guys in armor. We are right next to them. Yay!!!!!!

Hope to see you all there. It would be wonderful to hear everyone's thoughts on Boom Boom and Belly Queen!!!!!

If you are not familiar with Tiffany, she is a *wonderful* woman, unbelievable dancer and inspiring performer.
Being of the Suhaila School of Dance she is well-versed in the history of the dance, and in Jamila Salimpour format, which I can imagine would be of great interest to all the tribal dancers out there! I don't get anything for helping promote this workshop, I am just super excited about it and would like to see everyone there.

Boom Boom Bellyfest is just a few days away and we are very excited! Thank you all so much for your interest in this event, we plan to keep bringing you exciting opportunities to expand your dance knowledge.

If you are already registered for workshops this weekend, please arrive 15 minutes early so we have time to check you in before class starts. If you have not signed up for the workshops you plan to take, please note that four of the workshops are sold out and will not be accepting drop ins unless a pre-registrant no-shows for class. The sold out classes are:

Smooth Moves and Combos with Zaphira on Saturday from 11am - 1pm
if you wish to take this workshop, you can sign up for the duplicate workshop taking place the same day from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

The Fast & the Furious with Unmata on Saturday from 1:30 - 3:30 pm
if you wish to take this workshop, you can sign up for the duplicate workshop taking place Saturday morning from 8:30 - 10:30.

Despite the high demand for Unmatas Au Natural workshop to be repeated, only a few people have signed up for the repeat workshop. If you were planning to take this workshop, please let us know or register ASAP so we know there is sufficient interest. If we do not meet the minimum registration requirement Unmata will not be repeating the workshop. If this is the case, those who have registered and payed will be refunded in full. We will be making the decision to keep it or cancel it this Thursday, so please make us aware of your intent soon!

Friday Sept. 28th -- my last night at Smiley's

As most of you know, I'm moving to Honolulu in a week to start a new job. So, sadly, tomorrow night will be my last performance at Smiley's, at least until I come back to visit! I'll be dancing with most of Midriff and it should be a blast! You know the drill: 2 sets, 10 and 11 pm. We'll probably go out to Asylum or Plush or somewhere afterwards. Smiley's has moved -- the 420 Shisha House (retail store) is on the corner of 7th St. and Hoff. The lounge is right behind that on Hoff. Park as you normally would down on the avenue and then walk down. It is behind Che's. The phone number is 882-4853 if you get lost. Hope to see you tomorrow!

New yarn store

The grand opening of Tucson Yarn Company was today, so I went in the check out the stock. So much yarn loveliness! For us dancers, they have Collinette, Manos, and various other hand-dyed yarns (Lorna's Laces.... mmmmmmm...). It almost makes me want to make a yarn belt, even though I'm morally opposed to them (If you want to wear yarn, knit it into something!)

Also, we have a change in the workshop line-up. On Sunday, Oct 7th, the Zafira Sword Workshop at 11am-1pm has been changed to a Shimmy workshop! Yay for shimmies! Due to space limitations with swords, we’ve decided to change it up and offer a workshop that allows for more dancers to sign up.

Here’s the Shimmy Workshop Description, and you KNOW you want to take it! Who can resist SHIMMIES?!!

3/4 Shimmies!

Take your shimmies to the next level! In this workshop we will cover the classic 3/4 shimmy, with walking, layering exercises and drills. We will also take the 3/4 shimmy to parts of our bodies you never knew were supposed to 3/4 shimmy!

We will cover 4/4 shimmies as well to better understand and get better control of our hips.

To finish off our workshop we'll cover some unique combos utilizing what we learned, Zafira style!

Please bring water and a yoga mat for warm up & cool down.

If you want to take the shimmy workshop I suggest you sign up quick as this one is right around the corner from selling out too!

I rearranged my living room yesterday and noticed that I am missing my Rachel Brice DVD. Like a moron, I can't remember who I loaned it to. If you have it, please respond. Or, if you gave it back please let me know so that I can figure out if I have misplaced it.

If you don’t have a particular talent but still want to audition, a limited number of chorus positions will be filled for both male and female. Tomorrow night is the 4th Tuesday of the month! That means we will be out in force dancing away and practicing moves. Come hang with Clan Nightwolf, members of Midriff Crisis, and lots of friends at Reid Park. Bring the kids, a picnic, and a blanket to sit on!! It usually kicks off around 7:30 PM and runs until 9'ish. It is so beautiful this time of year at night. Come in to the parking lot on 22nd just east of Country Club. Look for the guys in armor. We are right next to them. Yay!!!!!! Bring your drums, zills, or hip scarves and join right in.

Yes, that is what I said! Emma and I will be dancing this FRIDAY and SATURDAY at Smiley's!!! Both nights will be packed with fun tribal and new solos!!!! We start at 10 PM on both nights. I would love to see you all!!!!!!!!!

We will be hosting a Celebration of Life event in memory of Kathy. It is my hope that this can help everyone in their healing process from the void left in our lives by Kathy's passing.

Plans are still in their initial stages, but I wanted to get the time and place out as soon as possible to ensure everyone who wants to attend has plenty of time to make arrangements. It will be a potluck so we ask that you bring a small dish of some kind to share. Other than the food, I am hoping to arrange some entertainment. We will also have a time for people who are interested in saying a few words. If you have a suggestion, question, or contribution, please do not hesitate to e-mail me.

One last thing. Kathy was never much of a plant or flower person, being allergic to them. In lieu of plants or flowers we have two suggestions:

1) Make a donation in Kathy's name to the charity of your choice. We suggest the American Cancer Society to help fight against the thing that took Kathy from us. However, Kathy was always a giving person so she would be happy with any charity.

2) Make a donation to a trust fund set up for Alyssa's education:

You all rock my world! And, to all the men and women that came out to support us...a special thanks to you! You guys packed the house!!!!! I have never seen so many people in Smiley's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A special thanks goes out to the Smiley's and thier staff. Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah

So freaking awesome!! I already learned the choreo in it. It is slow and wonderful!!!!

Her drills are fabulous!!!!!!!!!!! OMG...I want to bring her here!!!!!!

I haven't done the yoga yet. My foot is not that strong.

But, I really recommend this DVD. I bought it directly from her at www.ariellah.com for $20.

ABOUT MORIA:
Moria's enigmatic stage presence is born from a history of training in San Francisco bellydance technique that combines the Salimpour method, stylization from The Indigo, and Fat Chance posturing. Remembering her mother's early practice of bellydance, her father's study of yoga, and from what later became a background of classical dance and theatre in her youth, Moria was moved to exclusively study bellydance after graduating Magne Cum Laude from the University of California, Irvine. Inspired by the spirit of bellydance as it allows for the organic and gypsy nature of life to move serpentine through space, her personal fusion of circus art, theatre make-up, and rich costuming brings a grace and elegance to tribal bellydance that evokes the majestic. She has performed music and dance in collaboration with Suhaila and Jamilla Salimpour via Bal Anat and The Suhaila Dance Company; with Ziah Ali via Awalim; and currently with Rachel Brice and Sharon Kihara via The Bellydance Superstars. Moria performs and teaches internationally and is well loved within the bellydance community and beyond.

ABOUT KAMI:
Kami's style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop, jazz, and bhangra dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and also collaborates with other dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo, directed by Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samantha Riggs of Boom Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the company. Kami was nominated for 'Best Kept Secret"and 'Best Interpretive Artist" for 2005 by Zaghareet Magazine and won the title 'Entertainer of the Year 2005" at Wiggles of the West. Kami currently tours with The Bellydance Superstars.

Belly dance Hafla at Smiley's on May 20th!

We had such a great time at the last one that we have decided to do it one more time!! This time, I promise not to break anything!!!!!!

We have got a great line-up of dancers! You don't want to miss this. :o))

Hafla begins at 6:00 PM
